The Station

Maiden Newton Station, a Grade 2 listed building, stands on the edge of the village.

It has level access from the station approach to Platform 1, for Yeovil and Bristol. Platform 2 however, for Dorchester, can be reached only by the footbridge.

The Surrounding Area

Nestling between scenic rolling hills in the Frome valley, there are some wonderful opportunities to explore stunning countryside from the little station at Maiden Newton. The Wessex Ridgeway passes very close to the station and takes you up into the hills above the village for glorious views over this stunning part of the Dorset Area of Outstanding Beauty.

The station is well situated for a stroll around this friendly village, and the community have created a great map beside the station exit showing all their local amenities. The parish church of St Mary’s is in an enchanting setting and has a number of fascinating features including a rare doorway surviving from Norman times, and a twelfth century font. There are several shops, including a wonderful hardware store that has a reputation for stocking hard to find essentials, the Chalk and Cheese Pub, and the cosy coffee shop and restaurant, No 64.

This pretty station, which owes much to the work of local volunteers who have “adopted” it and created station gardens, was once a thriving junction to the old Bridport line, which is gradually being transformed into the West Dorset Trailway by Sustrans and Dorset County Council The local community created a poster telling this history, as well as a useful map to welcome visitors to the village
