A special anniversary celebration bringing the railway and local community together.

Upwey railway station celebrated its 140th anniversary with a very special community event, bringing together the railway, local schoolchildren and the wider community.

Our Community Rail Officer, Chantelle, has been building a strong relationship with St Nicholas and St Laurence School in Upwey. From this partnership came a wonderful idea: to celebrate the station's anniversary by giving the station waiting shelter a colourful new look, featuring artwork created by the school's pupils.

The project brought the station and the local community together, with the children's artwork transformed into vibrant vinyl displays for the waiting shelter. The result is a unique and welcoming space that celebrates both the history of the station and the creativity of the young people who live locally.

More than 100 pupils, teachers and the Head Teacher attended the anniversary celebration, alongside the Mayor of Weymouth, Councillor David Harris.

It was a fantastic day of celebration, with the station providing the perfect setting for everyone to come together, celebrate its long history and look towards its future as an important part of the local community.

And, of course, no birthday celebration would be complete without cupcakes! 🧁

The project is a wonderful example of what Community Rail can achieve by bringing schools, communities and the railway together – creating a lasting legacy at the station and giving local young people a chance to make their mark on their community.

140 years of Upwey Station – celebrating the past, inspiring the future.
